Is facebook, a relevant authority?

By Winston Muleba II
Wonders shall never end. Facebook fan base keeps growing every day and apparently is one of the mostly used social app by young people.

It is surprising that people have turned some irrelevant facebook pages and groups into relevant authorities where they report or file in complaints. For quite some time now people use facebook as a forum for reporting or sharing problem cases like stealing, adultery, witchcraft and many other acts. This system of using facebook as platform for reporting various issues has attracted so many stakeholders such that even problems of where an employer delays to pay the employees their monthly dues in time or if the condition of services do not conform to our Zambian labour laws, the relevant authority people rush to report to such matters is irrelevant facebook pages and groups. When one is dumped in a relationship for a more serious and perhaps matured person, the best platform for sharing such matters is irrelevant facebook pages and groups. If one is abused / harassed by their landlord/boss at work, the relevant authority they report to is irrelevant facebook pages and groups. When one is swindled by real estate agents, motivational speakers, stone dealers, customs/tax agents, phone dealers, the relevant authority they report to such matters is irrelevant facebook pages and groups. When one is not accordingly serviced by a Bank, the best office to report to is irrelevant facebook pages and groups. When one wants to expose some illegal dealings or corruptions matters involving certain individuals, the relevant authority to report too is irrelevant facebook pages and group. When one wants to expose drug trafficking or money laundering deals, the relevant authority they report to is irrelevant facebook pages and groups. The list is endless.

Most of the relevant authorities have subscribed to facebook and they have like buttons on their websites. This is the best channel one can use to report, share a complaint or problem.

Since when did every facebook page and/or group become Zambia Police Service, Drug Enforcement Commission, Human Rights Commission, Zambia Revenue Authority, Labour Office, Industrial Relations Court, Small Claims Court, Victim Support Unit, every bank, counseling centre etc.? And do such pages/groups solve the reports and complaints posted to them?

It is illogical to use a platform to share or report a complaint to group or page online which does not provide the needed change, which will not pay the monthly dues on demand, which will not arrest the exposed individuals, which does provide a required advice and most importantly in general sharing or reporting complaints to a page and/or group on facebook which will not come to your aid.

Just a reminder, using wrong facebook platforms for sharing and reporting certain matters have put so many people0 troubles. Others have been charged of defamation of character, slander, rebellion, contempt of court etc. As such it must be born in one’s mind that using facebook wrongly has got consequences. It is boldly said that ignorance is no defense.

Law applies equally to all regardless of whether the individual has knowledge of it or not.
