Government says it has embarked on a Girls Education and
Women’s Empowerment and Livelihood (GEWEL) project to
help reduce poverty in the country.

Secretary Reverend Howard Sikwela says in the GEWEL
project 75,000 women will be empowered countrywide wide.
Rev, Sikwela says in Lufwanyama district on the Copperbelt ,
for example, 720 women under phase one were currently
undergoing
training on how to manage their businesses.
He explained that each of the 720 women will be given a
minimum of K2, 000. 00 at the end of the training as star-
ups for their businesses.

Howard Sikwela said this yesterday when he visited
Lufwanyama district on the Copperbelt Province to assess
the progress of the first phase of the project.
And Lufwanyama District Commissioner Miniver Mtesa
explained that the GEWEL project will improve the livelihood
of the women of Lufwanyama district whom she said were
among those topping the list of those living in abject
poverty.
Through GEWEL project government is offering various skills
such as : context-specific training, mentoring, peer support,
provision of productivity grants and help with setting up
savings clubs.
