Students from Apex University have lost their belongings
after a hostel which was harboring them at Chikuni Mission
Hospital in Monze District caught fire yesterday.
The fire is believed to have started around 16hrs in one of
the rooms where the service cable is connected to and later
spread to another.
Confirming the development, Eugene
Muleya a senior staff at the institution said the fire was only
discovered around 17hrs after students returned to the
hostel after meeting their instructor.
Muleya says the cause of the fire is currently not known but
suspicions are that there was an electrical fault due to power
interruptions being experienced in the area.
Muleya also disclosed that 8 students completely lost their
belongings which included laptops, phones, books and
beddings while some also lost part of their items.
He added that at the moment it is not yet established how
much worthy of property was lost in the inferno.
He however, said they managed to stop the fire from
spreading to other rooms with help from Canisius Secondary
school pupils and some local women who did a tremendous
job.
Muleya who expressed sadness said the fire fighters only
arrived 2 hours after being called and found the fire had
already been put out.
