Child marriage continues to violate the rights of girls, but also boys, and threatens the achievement of the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDG).
The AU Campaign to End Child Marriage
was launched in 2014 in order to bring about change and make countries take responsibility to end this vice.
15 countries in Sub Saharan Africa have launched national campaigns to end Child Marriage.
Another 5 countries are expected to launch the campaign before the end of the year and more will follow during 2017.
During three days this week, including on the day of the International Day of the Girl Child, AU has gathered representatives in Lusaka to evaluate the campaign and
discuss on the way forward.
The Regional SRHR Team, based at the Swedish Embassy in Lusaka, recognizes the importance of eliminating child
marriage. In fact, this issue is closely linked to a number of areas that the Team is working with, like gender equality,
access to sexual and reproductive health, sexuality education etc. It is also in line with the Swedish Government’s Feminist Foreign Policy.
The Regional SRHR Team is working through advocacy in order to bring about change. In addition, the Regional SRHR
Team is also coordinating advocacy efforts by a number of Swedish embassies in Sub Saharan Africa.
“Together, we hope to bring the issue of child marriage higher up on the agenda in order to change norms, attitudes and legislation,” Regional SRHR Team states.
