A team of Zambian youths dubbed 'Athena' from the Copperbelt University (CBU) has been announced winner of the 2016 Chief Financial Officer ( CFO) Case Study Competition.
A team of Zambian youths dubbed 'Athena' from the Copperbelt University (CBU) has been announced winner of the 2016 Chief Financial Officer ( CFO) Case Study Competition.
Deon Fredericks, Chief Judge announced the final results of the competition yesterday.
In July this year, the Project Board of The CFO Case Study Competition announced the Top 6 teams that were competing for the semi-finals. The 6 teams included: Team Allez Consulting from Australia;
Team Athena from Zambia; Team Dolphins from Indonesia; Team Snipers from Ghana;
Team UKZN from South Africa and Team UP 116 from South Africa.
Overall, the competition attracted 320 teams representing 1,278 aspirants, 53 Universities in 25 countries across 5
continents.
These teams were being invited on an all-
expenses paid trip to Johannesburg, South Africa for the global semi-finals (Johannesburg Stock Exchange) and grand
finale at the Finance Indaba Africa 2016 Expo (Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg, South Africa).
The top three (3) teams that made it to the finals included: Team Allez Consulting from Australia; Team Athena from Zambia and Team Snipers from Ghana.
Meanwhile, Team Athena was composed of four (4) financial experts studying Accounting at the Copperbelt University. Team dynamics are a manifest of the origins of athena. The goddess of wisdom, courage, inspiration, civilisation, law and justice, mathematics, strength, war, strategy and arts and crafts.
The team said they drew the motivation from Ghandi who said “be the change you wish to see in the world”.
“We want to see Zambia and the African continent at large wake up from its
slumber and unlock its untapped potential to become self-sufficient, we are burning with determination to be part of this change,” the team said.
The team leader was David Mwanza who was the “Shaper” and drove the team forward as he ensured that all tasks were accomplished. Chanshi Mwandama was the “Resource Investigator” who created ideas, explored opportunities and contacts. Elinah Nyala was the “Implementer” as she turned ideas into action, payed attention to detail in the execution of the group tasks and Chileleko Hanjawa was the “Co-ordinator” who clarified goals and promoted decision making in the team's work.
The CFO is an annual multi-round business case study competition organised by The CharterQuest Institute and CharterCapital Advisory TeamSA, a committee of CIMA & ACCA students at the Institute with global case study competition experience and South Africa's CIMA2015 Global Business Challenge Champions.
It challenges young people who Aspire to be top CFOs or Business Leaders to demonstrate their potential by
competing to solve a set of complex finance, managerial and strategic problems that beset a real life African company.
The Objective of the competition is to prepare Africa's future CFOs & Business Leaders by advocating a deeper incorporation of the case study methodology into the curriculum, highlight the centrality of teamwork, logical thinking, presentation, report writing and creative problem solving skills as well as the value of taking a holistic and strategic approach to enterprise management.
