A city with a largest population on the Copperbelt which is also regarded as harbor of the Copperbelt Province and apparently a second largest city in terms of size and population in Zambia is arrayed with garbage’s in the central business district.
Zambia celebrates its 50th independence this Friday on the 24th October, among other government organisations priding to celebrate golden jubilee include Kitwe City Council whose mission is to improve quality of life of people of Kitwe district through the development of sustainable economic, environment and the provision of quality affordable social services and infrastructure with the active participation of all stakeholders.
Just recently Kitwe city council purchased two refuse trucks and 50 bins at a cost of K633000 to improve garbage collection in the city.
It is alleged that less than 10% of the generated waste is collected. This is either burnt or scattered around the town in illegal pits, piles, roads and even drainage system. This situation basically contributes to environmental degradation, poor public health conditions, high risks of epidemics and a generally aesthetically unpleasant environment.
Kitwe City is engulfed with garbage’s all over the CBD; this makes it one of the dirtiest cities.
