Beneficiaries of Fairview Hospital facilities wonders why HPCZ revoked license yet some worst Government clinics remain operational | WestMac Media

By Staff Writer, Lusaka
The beneficiaries of Lusaka's Fairview Hospital facilities have expressed disappointments after Professional Council of Zambia (HPCZ) revoked the operating license of the hospital with immediate effect leaving Government clinics operational.

One beneficiary says if Fairview Hospital can be a danger to peoples lives then a lot of Government clinics need to close further charging that in Government clinics a nurse can even strangle a patient for coughing too much.

And countering to this allegation, a beneficiary of Government hospital facilities adds people should not forget that Fairview Hospital is a private institution.

“Firstly, their aim is not to make loses but to make profit. Secondary, you can never find health workers in government practicing without licenses,” he says.

Another beneficiary of Fairview Hospital indicates that the hospital is one of the best hospitals she's ever been to.

“I trust it with my babies too. Their service is exceptional. This comes as a shock. I smell a conspiracy,” she says.

And another beneficiary of Government hospital facilities reiterate that people must understand the grounds for which this institution had their license revoked.

“Dispensing expired drugs, misdiagnosis's and employing uncertified personnel are very serious acts, especially for an institution whose line of operation involves the lives of people. Welcoming patients well and showing them DSTv is good, but it takes more to be a good health provider,” he explains adding that “part of the reason why this inspection was sanctioned is because of increased complaints against the said institution. Most people have gone as far as suing them for negligence among other things. However, not everyone has complaints against them though. Actually, most feel it's among the best. Unfortunately, the repute of a hospital and the verdict as to do whether it is fit to handle human lives or not. Health institutions can not only be judged on the good incidents, but rather on the bad ones. For a hospital, one bad incident is enough to nullify 999 good ones.”

Another beneficiary of Fairview Hospital people have clearly had different experiences with the hospital.

“Therefore, we can only comment based on that. Maybe because it is a private hospital. But for me, my bottom and major argument is that there are worse conditions in Government hospitals and Government should start by cleaning its own house. Zambians are subjected to pathetic services that I cannot even begin to explain,” he says.

And another beneficiary of Fairview Hospital says the hospital has exorbitant pricing, no proper DSTv channels and they don't clean their rooms like a hospital should.

“Generally, under-trained customer service staff! Bed sheets are not changed until one insists. People have been misdiagnosed by seemingly under qualified Doctors. A number of people I know have fallen victim to this hospital. Great move by HPCZ for me personally,” he explains.

All contributors in this controversy sought anonymity and efforts to get the Hospital side of the story proved futile.

Meanwhile, the Health Professional Council of Zambia (HPCZ) Legal counsel, Frank Lungu disclosed that the council with immediate effect revoked the operating license for Fairview Hospital in Lusaka for endangering the lives of patients.

The decision to revoke the license was arrived at after carrying out an impromptu visit to inspect the compliance levels at the hospital.

And addressing the Media soon after the operation, HPCZ Assistant Registrar, Dr. Joseph Wapabeyi cited abnormalities at the institution among them stocking and dispensing of expired drugs and three of the doctors were not registered with the council thereby putting the lives of patients in danger.
