Controversial artist Fumba Chama stage name Pilato says he will always stand with the youths, the students and the poor.
He says what happened at Copperbelt University (CBU) on Friday night is a clear manifestation of scared men and women who are protecting their positions and jobs by beating and arresting innocent students exercising their rights.
Pilato has urged students that the journey may be tough and draining but please this country depends on your survival.
“The minister of higher education is irrelevant in this puzzle. Education liberates the mind, they don't want a liberated youth because you will be more enlighted. They know with a liberated mind, you will begin to demand for answers,” he said.
He said Steve Biko was right when he said 'the most powerful weapon of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed'.
“Do not grow weary student, like Pharoah resisted the letting go of the Children of Israel, your release from poverty will be resisted both by the system and your government. Your government is a beneficiary of the uneducated population. The uneducated are moved by slogans and empty chants,” Pilato said.
Pilato added that the educated population is not easy to manipulate.
“So your own liberation is in your ability to persist and demand for whats rightfully yours. Education is your right. But its not cheap. Fight on, you are our heros and heroines,” he said.
On Friday CBU students were beaten and atleast 50 were arrested by police during a protest over term two delayed meal allowances.
Students protested after the Minister of higher Education Prof. Nkandu Luo declared that meal allowances for beneficiaries at CBU were suspended.
