ZAMBEZI River Authority (ZRA) has, however, dismissed as false reports circulating in some international media that the Kariba Dam wall is on the verge of collapsing. ZRA chief executive officer Munyaradzi Munodawafa told the Daily Mail that the Kariba Dam is 99 percent safe.
Mr Munodawafa said what is true is that if the dam wall is not rehabilitated, the structure would weaken.
“I wish to allay fears that the Kariba Dam wall is about to collapse. Those reports are not true. It is a misrepresentation of facts.
So there is no need for fear,” Mr Munodawafa said.
Howener, Government says it is actively looking into reports of the cracking of Kariba Dam wall in Siavonga.
Minister of Finance Alexander Chikwanda said in Lusaka yesterday that Government is aware of the risks any cracks may pose.
Mr Chikwanda said Government has had meetings with stakeholders to find solutions to the problem and has sought support of the World Bank, European Union and African Development Bank to tackle the challenge.Zambia daily mail
