Malaysia says no evidence missing plane flew hours after losing contact

By Eveline Danubrata and Nguyen Phuong Linh
KUALA LUMPUR/HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam (Reuters) - Malaysian authorities said on Thursday there was no evidence that a jetliner missing for almost six days flew for hours after losing contact with air traffic controllers and continued to transmit technical data.
The Wall Street Journal said that U.S. aviation investigators and national security officials believed the Boeing 777 flew for a total of five hours, based on data automatically downloaded and sent to the ground from its Rolls-Royce Trent engines as part of a standard monitoring program.
(http://r.reuters.com/ruw57v) "Those reports are inaccurate," Malaysian Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein told a news conference. "As far as both Rolls-Royce and Boeing are concerned, those reports are inaccurate. The last (data) transmission from the aircraft was at 01:07 a.m.(local time) which indicated that everything was normal." Boeing and Rolls-Royce have yet to comment.
Reuters has previously reported that the plane's transmission of the so-called ACARS technical data ceased after it lost contact with air traffic control.
Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, with 239 people on board, dropped off air traffic control screens at about 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, less than an hour into a flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. There were no reports of bad weather or mechanical problems.
It is one of the most baffling mysteries in the history of modern aviation - there has been no trace of the plane since nor any sign of wreckage despite a search by the navies and military aircraft of over a dozen countries across Southeast Asia.
"It's extraordinary that with all the (satellite and telecommunication) technology that we've got that an aircraft can disappear like this," Tony Tyler, head of the International Air Transport Association that links over 90 percent of the world's airlines, told reporters in London.
"It will trigger a desire to see how can we avoid this from happening again... I wouldn't be surprised that the technology didn't exist already but is not being used."
The last definitive sighting on civilian radar screens came as the plane flew northeast across the mouth of the Gulf of Thailand.
On Wednesday, Malaysia's air force chief said military radar had traced what could have been the jetliner to an area south of the Thai holiday island of Phuket in the Malacca Strait, hundreds of miles to the west of its last known position. However, he stressed the plotting had not been corroborated.
The multi-national search team is combing both bodies of water, which total 27,000 square nautical miles (93,000 square km), an area the size of Hungary.
Hishammuddin however said the focus was on the Gulf of Thailand and the nearby South China Sea, where the plane lost contact. The United States will send the world's most advanced maritime surveillance aircraft, the P-8A Poseidon, to join the search later this week. On the sixth day of the search, planes scanned an area of sea where Chinese satellite images had shown what could be debris, but found no sign of the airliner. Hishammuddin said the images were provided accidentally.
"The Chinese government neither authorized nor endorsed (putting it on a website)," he said. "The image is not confirmed to be connected to the plane." It was the latest in a series of false signals for the Boeing 777-200ER, adding to the confusion and agony of the relatives of the passengers. As frustration mounted over the failure to find any trace of the plane, China heaped pressure on Malaysia to improve coordination in the search. Around two-thirds of the people aboard the lost plane were Chinese. Premier Li Keqiang, speaking at a news conference in Beijing, demanded that the "relevant party" step up coordination while China's civil aviation chief said he wanted a "smoother" flow of information from Malaysia, which has come under heavy criticism for its handling of the disaster. If the military radar signal cited by air force chief Rodzali Daud was the missing plane, the aircraft would have flown for 45 minutes and dropped only about 5,000 feet in altitude since its sighting on civilian radar in the Gulf of Thailand.
That would mean the plane had turned sharply west from its original course, travelling hundreds of miles over the Malay Peninsula from the Gulf of Thailand to the Andaman Sea to a point roughly south of Phuket and east of the tip of Indonesia's Aceh province and India's Nicobar island chain.
Indonesia and Thailand have said their militaries detected no sign of any unusual aircraft in their airspace. Malaysia has asked India for help in tracing the aircraft and New Delhi's coastguard planes have joined the search.
 U.S. EXPERTS ASSISTING
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement that its experts in air traffic control and radar who traveled to Kuala Lumpur over the weekend were giving the Malaysians technical help. A U.S. official in Washington said the experts were shown two sets of radar records, military and civilian, and they both appeared to show the plane turning to the west across the Malay peninsula.
But the official stressed the records were raw data returns that were not definitive. Authorities have not ruled out any cause for the disappearance.
Malaysian police have said they were investigating whether any passengers or crew on the plane had personal or psychological problems that might shed light on the mystery, along with the possibility of a hijacking, sabotage or mechanical failure.
Hishammuddin however said media reports that police had searched the homes of the missing aircraft's crew were false.
Two of the passengers on board were discovered by investigators to have false passports, but they were apparently seeking to emigrate illegally to the West. The Boeing 777 has one of the best safety records of any commercial aircraft in service. Its only previous fatal crash came on July 6 last year when Asiana Airlines Flight 214 struck a seawall with its undercarriage on landing in San Francisco, killing three people. Boeing has declined to comment beyond a brief statement saying it was monitoring the situation.

Malaysian plane is still missing, but passengers’ phones are ringing, online activity traced

Phantom phone calls and online presence set off a whole new level of hysteria.
According to the Washington Post, family of some of the 239 people on board the vanished Boeing 777 said that they were getting ring tones and could see them active online through a Chinese social networking service called QQ. One man said that the QQ account of his brother-in-law showed him as online, but frustratingly for those waiting desperately for any news, messages sent have gone unanswered and the calls have not been picked up.

However the phantom phone calls and online presence set off a whole new level of hysteria for relatives who have spent the past three-days cooped-up in a Beijing hotel waiting for some concrete information on the missing plane. Repeatedly telling Malaysian Airlines officials about the QQ accounts and ringing telephone calls, they hoped that modern technology could simply triangulate the GPS signal of the phones and locate their relatives.

According to Singapore’s Strait Times, a Malaysia Airlines official, Hugh Dunleavy has confirmed to families that his company had tried to call the cellphones of crew members and they too had also rang out.

The International Business Times reported that the sister of one of the Chinese passengers also rang his phone on live television.

“This morning, around 11.40, I called my older brother’s number twice, and I got the ringing tone,” said Bian Liangwei, sister of one of the passengers according to IBT.

At 2pm, Bian called again and heard it ringing once more. “If I could get through, the police could locate the position, and there’s a chance he could still be alive.”

Facebook's Sheryl Sandberg And The Rise Of Women Billionaires

IN THE WORLD OF Self-Made, hoodie-wearing technology billionaires, Sheryl Sandberg has pulled off something improbable: She has joined their ranks without founding her own company or writing a single line of code.

The fact that Facebook’s chief operating officer is a woman is incidental, of course, but it’s also noteworthy: Of the 268 newcomers to the 2014 FORBES Billionaires list, 42 are women–a single-year record and, more notably, the highest-ever percentage of newcomers (and of women billionaires overall–172 out of 1,645 ).

That’s progress. But only a bit. Only 32 billionaire women–or 1.9% of all the globe’s billionaires–had a meaningful hand in building their own fortunes, as opposed to inheriting one from a parent or husband. Sandberg joins the dozen women, including Spanx’s Sara Blakely, fashion designer Tory Burch and Oprah Winfrey, who accomplished this feat without the help of a husband or sibling. And only she and Meg Whitman, who worked at Hasbro and FTD before joining eBay, accomplished this feat as hired hands of tech companies.

Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg has parlayed her stints at Facebook and Google into a personal fortune worth more than $1 billion.

Thus Sandberg’s perspective, distilled in her bestseller, Lean In, seems doubly apt. In a recent interview with FORBES she said she was “real optimistic” about the dialogue and debate generated by her book, which exhorts professional women to pour more energy into their careers, stop tolerating that high achievers are termed “bossy” while their male counterparts are praised as “aggressive,” and pick partners who will share in parenting and household duties.

“Businesses are going to care about diversity not because they want to do good in the world,” says Sandberg. “They’re going to care about diversity if it’s going to change their bottom line.” She says that she hosts private “Lean In Circles” and, in her book, advocates for others to do the same. Over dinner at her home, other leading women hear from special guests. One speaker: Cisco CEO John Chambers. “What he understood is that it wasn’t about having women in your company but about having women in leadership roles. … If you have the best talent, you’re going to have the best performance.” That presumably will translate to more women like Sandberg shattering the ten-figure ceiling

Mulenga Kapwepwe responds

Hello People! Most of you must have been wondering what on earth was going with Mulenga Kapwepwe while “the battle for the soul of the National Arts Council’ has been raging! The silence from my end, am told has been conspicuously loud.
Well, here I am to break the silence and to let you in on what has been going on while the storm to toss me out of the National Arts Council Ark raged! This is just to let you know that I have followed Miss Imboela’s intellectual discourse with avid interest, most of the time I must admit, with my mouth wide open (as in ninshi ni njikata cinwa capanshi) or with my eyes shut (as in laughing out loud or LOL I believe).
Now let me admit from the outset, that insele, nefyakutukana fyena, showing disrespect to my elders or even my peers etc I am not very good at, here I can agree with Miss Imboela that I am completely useless! So I will not even go there. Let me just say that when it comes to the National Arts Council, I merely chair a board that comprises of eight national arts associations and a four line Ministries (the numbers have shifted upwards and downwards over the years, this is the current line up). Decisions and actions taken by the Council are not mine, but are collectively debated and normally voted on. These decisions ultimately affect and direct the performance of the National Arts Council. Miss Imboela has sat on the National Arts Council board, and I am sure the years she sat on the Council will certainly stand out as the ‘golden Years’ for the Council when it performed really well. But since according to her it never has performed, perhaps her sitting on the Council was as silent as her music career. We as a Council sit four times a year… perhaps this is why it looks like I have been there for 14 years! A small note here, there was no Council in existence 14 years go (you can check this history). But am sure since I love the Chairmanship so much I must have been Chairing an empty room full of chairs and imaginary associations for at least four years. Let me also beg your sympathy here, since according to Miss Imboela, I have been without a proper job and have no marketable degree and have been surviving on allowances from the National Arts Council for so long. Until very recently, the sitting allowance at the Council was K150.00 per sitting, as chair I get an extra K50 more than the rest. As you can imagine, it has been a hard life subsisting on this amount, as I am only been able to receive it every quarter when a full Council meeting is held.
There are no other allowances at the Council. Pepani olila! Another small note here, that as a public institution, the National Arts Council is audited every year by a private firm and also by the Auditor General’s Office. So far, in the last 14 years (let’s imagine despite history and mathematics and all sorts of contrary evidence that this number of years is actually correct) that there has been no audit query indicating any ‘long fingered’ moves from the Chairman or anyone else. Please contact the Auditor General’s Office on this point.
I am also immensely flattered or embarrassed that I have managed to charm or bully or bewitch all the 8 Ministers and 11 Permanent Secretaries (not counting the deputies here) and two Governments I have had the privilege to work under as Chair of the National Arts Council over the past 14 terms (yes in the last post by Miss Imboela I noticed the 14 years have become terms). But let’s leave the Council out of this and dwell on Mulenga Kapwepwe, since the council is not Mulenga Kapwepwe. Please bear with me if I sound rather flippant about all this, seeing as I am accused of grave and single-handed misconduct that has resulted in high poverty levels amongst artists and the wanton destruction of an entire industry.
My philosophy is simply not to harbor anger and malice and jealousy in my mind and body (if you are the type that gets angry at least twice a day, please read a very interesting little book by a neurobiologist by the name called ‘A Stroke of Insight ‘ I especially urge those who have held on to anger, jealousy or malice for at least 14 years, you will understand how corrosive such emotions are on your mind and body. I tend to flash them out as quickly as they arise). Let the record show that I bear no anger or grudge against the intellectual might of Miss Imboela and she has absolutely every right to criticize me, she has her opinions. However defamation, libel and slander are not opinions, and it would be wonderful if she could discern the difference between these four things. I trust this little request will not be too difficult for her as she has repeatedly told us that she is a lawyer and a lecturer in law at the University of Zambia.
I call myself a creative, which am told is a perfectly legitimate status in a world where the creative economy is driving most nations’ development engines. I am in other words, an artist, and it is bewildering to find that as far as Miss Imbolea is concerned being an artist means you do not have a proper job, I can accept that from other people, but coming from a fellow artist makes it somehow defeating, If we do not regard our work as artists as our jobs, who will?
So, if I am a creative, what do I create. All of last year I have been working on a project, which up until last week had no name, because I was still figuring out what to call it and under what name to register the new record label I am about to launch. Thanks to Miss Imboela, I do have a name for it now, and I have decided to use the great publicity and visibility Miss Imboela’s massive campaign has accorded me to launch Chiduku Beats, a company that will work every year with three artists (as a group or individual) to create a new and creative sound. My objective is to engage three artists every year and push them to stretch their creativity and imagination to see what they can do. I am not a musician, but I believe I can still help in the industry by hiring the right expertise and skills. So I am putting the excerpts of the music videos and music that I have produced so far, working with Tasila Mwale, Shimasta and Mozgeta, and Glorious Band. I have been fully engaged in all aspects of both the music and video productions, scripting and suggesting edits and additions. These three CDs and accompanying videos will soon be available on iTunes, Youtube and in the music shops. Check them out and let me know what you think. And keep checking this spot for the latest in regard to date of their release.
In addition, coming to your television screens soon, will be a concept I have created with the help of young group of animators. I do the research and script they do the shooting and animation. This is my way of circumventing, but maybe re-inventing the reading culture and providing interesting information to the public creatively. It will be a short infomercial aimed at educating the public using the street names around the city. These young people are incredible and just take a look at what we have managed to create.
I am also just looking to publish an anthology of poems called ‘Life and Love in Chitenge.” I have approached Karasa to work with me on this as he is an incredible visual artist, as well as musician. I hope he does come on board, but if not, I will respect his decision. Here is one poem from the book. Make sure you buy it when it comes out. These are some of the things am working on. Did I mention that Miss Imboela features on one of the songs on the Shimasta and Mozgeta CD? Yes, we got her into the studio to bop and sing along to the danceable tune called ‘Evelina’. Thank God for Facebook, you can now listen to an excerpt of that too. I think she sounds pretty swanky don’t you?!
Last word, I plan to have a great launch for the three CDs, please do come, the only thing I ask is, come wearing a chiduku, Whether you are male or female, and when the MC shouts Chiduku Beats, I want all of you who will come to shout “Wamuyaya!” Thanks Saboi, for the great campaign tagline and great name choice! Enjoy the music and please support the music industry!
P.S. Should Miss Imboela succeed in removing me from the National Arts Council chairmanship, don’t feel sorry for me, I will survive, even though I will have to do without my annual income from the sitting allowance of one thousand five hundred kwacha per year .
P.P.S Congratulations Lupita N’yongo who won herself an Oscar award last night! Great achievement for an African woman! Now let’s turn this ugly fight into something productive.

Youth Employment, bananas and hope in Zambia

Who would ever think that something as simple as bananas could provide opportunities to break the cycle of poverty? In the village of Chongwe in Zambia, a banana plantation has become a symbol of hope.
The teens and young adults in Chongwe are among a booming sector of the population known as the “youth bulge,” which is concentrated especially in the developing world.
Outnumbering adults disproportionately, these youth (ages 15 to 25) face an extraordinarily tight job market. A young Zambian man who tends banana plants. With support from ChildFund, the village of Chongwe is defying the odds. By bringing the community together and offering resources and education, ChildFund has helped the youth of Chongwe transform a growing problem into lasting change. Through its Youth Empowerment Program, ChildFund challenged these young people to envision a collaborative effort that would mobilize their skills and create a long-term opportunity for employment. The program applied ChildFund’s Youth Employment Model, which is designed specifically to prepare young people to enter the workforce.
The model takes participants through a five-part process: a market survey (to ensure job training is demand-driven), technical skills training and production support, basic business skills training, life skills training and ongoing mentoring. Through these activities, the youth in Chongwe realized that their community offered a perfect environment for agriculture, and they suggested trying to establish a banana plantation. Soon, the idea moved toward becoming a reality. A ChildFund grant paid for seeds and a state-of-the-art, solar-powered irrigation system.
A local chief donated land, and the Ministry of Agriculture taught the young participants how to grow bananas and maintain their equipment. A fertilizer company provided the training to farm the plantation. Youth clear a field for banana plants. The result is a flourishing farm of more than 1,500 banana trees and residual employment opportunities for the youth. Since the program began in 2010, many youth in Chongwe have become prospering entrepreneurs. They have learned to run a business and follow how bananas fit into the larger world economy, daily checking commodity prices. Some of the boys and girls who care for the banana plantation are laying foundations for other businesses, like one young man who started a vegetable garden and palayed it into a grocery business. What began as a challenge has become an opportunity. The Chongwe youth are a testament to the kind of change that can happen when potential is tapped and resources allow it to flourish.

You are who you are

By Mutinta Musokotwane

AN OLD, old friend of mine came to see me at the office and as our discussion progressed beyond catching up she asked me “but ine why sinikwatiliwa Mutinta?” I contemplated telling her the usual “just pray mama, blah blah blah” but my conscience wouldn’t allow me. She asked for my opinion and I needed to be a friend enough to give it to her. Anyone who knows me will tell you I am the “ to go to girl” for brutal honesty. So I needed to tell her that she needed to couple the praying bit with deeds – i.e change the way she dresses.
I asked my friend to stand up so I could take a proper look at her. She was wearing Jeggings, and a short top that was not only revealing cleavage but also her middle was left bulging. I scrutinized her bleached skin which had now become patchy – (some parts are coca cola and some are fanta). She also donned the trendy clunky heels that I often see on Nicki Minaj, Mampi and Lady Gaga. Her “Brazilian” locks were all the way to her bottom. More times than not, this is her normal look. Now let me ask the boys; is this the sort of girl you would take home to mama or just to bed? I don’t think any man in his right mind would take someone who looks like that to mama and I told my friend as such. I told her that her chosen type of dress will invariably help her score bedmates but will exclude her from the “marriage material” list. Even if marriage is not a goal for you, being respectable should be. My take is that generally you have to choose what you want people to perceive you as. Whether in the office, in your marriage, with friends etc. Your image is something that you must craft carefully. You have to have goals and strategies to enhance your image and follow these through. Whether you like it or not; whether you believe it or not, it all begins with the way you look. So here’s this old friend who wanted to find a husband but dressed like a hooker.
If you have never thought of your image before, this is a good time to think about it. You have to begin by asking yourself how you want people to see you and then align this image with your overall goals. For example, if you have a goal to find a husband, you have to dress a certain way, speak a certain way and behave a certain way. If it’s your intention to climb up high on the corporate ladder, you got to dress the part of your boss or her boss. Look like a winner – dress the part you want to be. You also have to read widely in your field, polish up your emotional intelligence and much more. Your image has a significant impact on perception of your skills whether in the workplace, as someone’s future partner or even as a leader.
Crafting your image should be intentional and calculated. A good image will not happen by accident. You will need to invest time and money – you will have to have a plan and clear idea of what you want to be. Pay attention to the details – the devil is after all in the detail. Get it right the first time. Visual – What you wear matters Are your clothes appropriate for your age; your body type; and the event or audience? .There’s a dress for everybody type and for every age – if you’re in your 40s, don’t dress like a 20 year old etc. If you have had children like I have, don’t attempt to spill your not so slender figure into a slinky dress. It has become downright embarrassing to see grown women who are in some cases grandmothers wearing short, mid thigh dresses. I mean really! What exactly are you trying to portray? Some women are dressing as if they are going to perform at some music awards ceremony.
If you are looking to be taken seriously at all you really have to be careful how you dress. Especially in the workplace, regardless of the industry you work in, if you present yourself in a neat stylish and professional manner, you will be perceived to be prepared, intelligent and articulate. You will command respect and exude authority and trust. On the other hand if you wear clothes that outline all your internal assets then really you are just calling for trouble.
I recently attended a high profile signing ceremony in which the spokesperson for a high profile company was dressed in a really tight dress. I had a word with her (don’t worry she’s a good friend), telling her how inappropriate her dress was. Her answer to me was “but that man said I look really good”. She had missed the point. Of course she looked good – infact she looked stunning, she is a gorgeous girl. But she didn’t understand that professionalism doesn’t allow for that kind of g-string showing type of dress. The way you dress is a part of your professionalism. That kind of dressing says “I don’t have brains so I will use bottom power”. Bad apparel can lead to you losing out on a promotion, clients’ choosing another firm and deals not closing.
Ladies, just because the outfit is nice doesn’t mean it’s meant for the office. Some of the outfits you are wearing are meant for a birthday/kitchen party. Really they are. Stay away from sleeveless tops, they are not professional. Don’t wear the see through tops even if you wear a camisole or vest underneath. Such clothes are not meant for the office. They just aren’t. Also avoid the loud accessories and the bright gaudy colors. Unless of course you are out on the town.
Some people seem to think “casual Friday” means “pig sty” Friday. It doesn’t. It simply means you can tone down on the ties and the formal suits. However you still need to ensure that you are smart and presentable enough to represent the organization your work for. Lose the grubby, stone wash faded jeans for some nice, clean blue or black jeans. Better yet, invest in some Chinos. Please don’t wear those nasty basketball sneakers to work just because it’s Friday. Instead go for a nice pair of loafers or a neat pair of sneakers that you didn’t have to pick out of the garbage can. Hair and Makeup is another area where we don’t seem to get it right. Ladies, please don’t colour your faces like you are the treasure in a treasure hunt. Take care that your features are enhanced instead of distorted by the blues, greens and pinks. I am yet to figure out and understand why black girls are wearing bright pink blusher meant for a pale, blond woman. Blusher is meant to bring out your natural glow. It’s not meant to be two bright pink spots on your cheeks that do not match your skin tone whatsoever. Ensure your foundation and powder is the correct shade.
I write about the “Brazilian hair” with great reserve. I know that it wouldn’t be big business if it wasn’t so popular. But you really have to ask yourself why you are putting it on your head and what it symbolizes to you. Does it make you feel like you have arrived because it is so expensive? I ask you though – why does it have to be so long? Why girls, why?
In part two I will look at Personal Hygiene (bad breath and body odour); Social Media, Self Esteem and General Etiquett.
You can continue wearing your bright pink blusher and your long “up to the tush” Brazilian hair after all – “I’m just saying”. God bless you all. You can email her on mutintamusokotwane@outlook.com or look me up on face book as Mutinta Musokotwane-Chikopela. Mutinta Musokotwane-Chikopela is a wife and mother who loves more than anything else to build families and generally try to leave the world a better place than she found it. SOURCE:MWEBANTU MEDIA

From an idea to business and profit

By Brian Matambo
some pointers on what you need to do to make sure that you maximize the potential of your ideas.
WRITE THE IDEA DOWN
This practice in itself can increase your chances of succeeding. Whatever is not written down does not have the mandate to become reality. The psychology of writing places obligation on the subconscious to demand action. Writing your idea down also helps in sticking to the original idea or monitoring its metamorphosis. That means the only way you can be faithful to your original idea is by writing it down. And if the idea requires a process of metamorphosis in order to increase its chances of achieving your mission, then writing it down will help you to track and manage those changes without losing the idea to the pressure of change.
BRAINSTORM THE IDEA Brainstorming opens your mind to further possibilities locked in your idea. Do not be afraid to share your ideas with your trusted colleagues or friends and be open to their suggestions and input.  But be careful who you tell about your idea because there are idea vultures who may go ahead and implement your vision without consulting you.
RESEARCH Research is key in business. You have to be curious about the projected market, the numbers, and the kind of cash flow you expect. Use the internet, talk to people in similar business. Talk to potential customer. Will it make things better? Will it solve a problem? Will it make things faster? Will it cost less? Will it add value to the customers’ life or business? Will it be preferable? Will it be profitable
BEFORE YOU FIND MONEY FOR YOU IDEA, FIND A MARKET FOR IT The only way to succeed in business is to make sales. Therefore top on your priority list should be “where will i sell it?” If you can have an order before you get the capital, the better.
CRITIC YOUR IDEA Do not be overly confidence in your ideas. Subject them to criticism. Can you use it yourself? Can you pay for it at the price or would you appreciate it better at a higher or lower price? Is it better than current alternatives?
QUALITIES OF A GOOD IDEA Need: more people will need it Cost: more people will afford it Location: more people will access it Ideas also fail when - Timing: Moving to fast or too slow. Pricing: Too expensive or too cheap Location: To far, inaccessible.
