3 music business tips Zambian artists must consider │WestMac Media

By DJ Mzenga Man

It’s not personal but simply business. Here are a few things you need to understand and accept with your heart in this music business:

1. When you pay an artist for a feature on your song, that’s specifically a feature for the audio. When the day comes for a video shoot, be ready to be charged for appearance. Don't take it personal when they tell you to pay them money to come for the shoot: listen; any were in the world that’s how it’s done: In fact; artists do not move alone they usually come with their dressers, managers, drivers and team members for most shoots. They need money for logistics, outfits, and beverages and of course for their time so they just sum up the cost into one charge! You are actually lucky when they agree to come minus approving the videographers work! Some will only accept if you are shooting with someone who is very good at videos. They care about their reputation too!

2. When you pay a producer to produce your song, be ready to pay him again if you want them to share your song or help with promotion. Each stream of service is separate from the other. Don't take it personal, every service offered is chargeable, do not mix things up. Maybe, agree from the beginning on what exactly in detail the producer will do for you other than just production so that you are on the same page.

3. There is a difference between a manager and a sponsor. A manager is actually paid by the artist: he works for the artist, his job is to manage your schedules, plans, programs, strategies and so on..... He is usually on paid up allowances and commissions by you! He is simply your worker.

On the other hand, a sponsor is the one that pumps money into your music business. Now, one fact you need to accept is that only in 1 out of 100 scenarios will you be able to find a sponsor. In short, stop frustrating yourself. Stop dreaming and wasting so much time looking for someone to pump money into your craft every day, money is scarce! Hustle hard and try to make it happen, in the process you might find people willing to invest in you!
