Illicit sex, morning-after pills business at UNZA worrisome - Tayali

By Staff Reporter, LUSAKA
Zambian Voice executive director, Chilufya Tayali has charged that Friday and Saturdays at University of Zambia (UNZA) and other tertiary institutions are all about partying and illicit sex for a good number of students especially females alias “momas.”

Mr Tayali who is also a part-time Lecturer at UNZA in political conflict management to union leaders said the business of selling 'morning after pills' in campus spells out a number of things.

“I passed through UNZA 14 years ago but I only graduated with two things; my first legitimate daughter Mubanga and one true cantankerous friend Justine Kapuba Lungu with whom we crafted The Zambian Voice together 6 years ago. Since I left UNZA I have been going back there to lecture. Last night, when I walked around UNZA in search of eligible students for my lectures, I came across a poster on one of the notice boards, morning after for sale in October 1-X. This advertisement brought concern to me because it spells out a number of things which all of us must be worried about,” he said.

He explained that illicit sex and morning after pills business entails serious moral decay in learning institutions.

“Secondary, it tell us that students are having illicit unsafe sex. Thirdly it tells us how exposed our students are to STIs and HIV?AIDS. Fourthly, the booming business of contraceptions and fifthly the danger of the side effects of these contraceptions to young ladies, especially in future when they will be adults occupying positions of responsibility,” Mr Tayali said.

Mr Tayali said certainly this should concern every responsible adult especially parents with children in higher learning institutions.

He added that it should also bring concerns to politicians. “It is like the someone is encouraging students to have illicit unsafe sex,” Mr Tayali charged.

He pointed that illicit sex at universities and colleges, has not started today, it has been there since time in memorial, however, these days it seems it is too much.

“Each time I am passing through UNZA at night, I see more students in compromising positions than I see students going to the library of Golf for studying. Friday and Saturdays are all about partying and illicit sex for a good number of students especially momas,” Mr Tayali pointed.

“I may not be the right person to address this problem but I am hoping someone out there may think of how best to help our young generation in terms of morality,” he said.

Mr Tayali has since called upon church leaders, moralists and parents to help students otherwise tertiary institutions might become a danger for the children rather than a place for getting education.

He allegedly said politicians should also know that, the pressure they exert on students, by delaying meal allowances, is causing further moral decay.

“Female students who depend on bursary become desperate if meal allowances are delayed and they are willing to engage a blesser (sponsor in exchange for sex) for some material blessings,” Mr Tayali said.

“I hope students will not have to go to the roadside for them to get their meal allowances in whichever government that will come after elections,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mr Tayali said UPND seems to have a good message towards the bursary problem.

“They are promising students that schools will not be closed and meal allowances will be on time,” he said.

Mr Tayali charged that Patriotic Front (PF) might get very few votes in tertiary institutions if they don't give students better promises on bursaries.

“I must actually warn the PF that, they might get very few votes in these institutions if they don't give students better promises on bursaries. It is not too late to address this problem and make some commitments to give students hope, through student loans,” he said.

“I think no politician would want to lose votes by delaying bursary, I think this is done because there is a problem and I would be happy if a politician identified that problem and then give a solution instead of just making empty promises just to get votes,” Mr Tayali added.
