Mazabuka district commissioner Jenny Chirwa has angered councilors in Chief Mwanachingwala, by suggesting that the culverts that have been lying along the Simwaaba-Kalama road will be used on other roads where people urgently need better roads.
Ms Chirwa told the councilors that the culverts have been left unattended to for a long time, wasting public resources.
She says the councilors have failed their people by allowing the road to remain in the same bad state for many years.
Ms Chirwa says the headmen approached her office over the bad state of some roads in Munenga but warned that the culverts will instead be taken away to improve the road network elsewhere.
She says if the councilors were as active as traditional leaders, the culvert along Simwaaba-Kalama road would have been used on the same road by now.
Meanwhile, councilors have angrily objected any movement of the culverts, saying it is not their fault that culverts have not been used by the government that must work on the road for its people.
The civic leaders charged that the government engaged a contractor who abandoned the project before completion.
The councilors said they will not allow anyone to take away the culverts because they are not to blame but the government.
Among the councilors who angrily objected the DC’s suggestion were Amon Shanabwato of Kalama, Mwanachingwala ward councilor Richard Malambo, Munenga ward councilor Richard Mwiinga and Itebe ward councilor Ronald Chinyama.
The civic leaders says they were offended by the DCs remarks when she said they are not working yet they have been going to her office to complain about the road networks in their respective wards.
