Kabwe Municipal Council has dispelled reports that it is planning on chasing street vendors from the street, and clarify that it is merely planning on relocating them to an area more conducive and therefore easy to manage the traders.
In a statement made available to WestMac Media, Assistant Public Relations Manager Mumba Mafwenko said the Council has noted the growing population of vendors on the street, which has become uncontrollable, making the town look dirty, disorderly and a danger to road users and vendors themselves, hence the need to regulate the times of street vending.
Ms Mafwenko stated that in an effort to bring sanity to Kabwe town, the Council will
relocate the street vendors from their various trading spots
in town to one point, which is Gabon Area, near the Big Tree
on Freedom Way. The vendors will further be allowed to
trade on the whole street on Freedom way from 17:00 hours until 19:30 hours.
“It should be noted that any vendor who will be found trading
before the stipulated times on Freedom Way will risk having
their merchandise confiscated.
Other vices that the Council would like to curb are the
cooking on the streets and corridors of shops as this is a
health hazard, the selling of liquor in the streets, as well as leaving of boxes and pellets by traders in the corridors overnight,” she stated.
She pointed out that the measures being taken by
the Local Authority are in line with the following statutes: 1. The Food and Drug Act Cap 303 as read with the Public.
Health Act Cap 295 of the Laws of Zambia 2. The Street Vending Nuisance Amendment of 2007. 3. The Liquor Licensing Act No. 11 of 2011.
Ms Mafwenko has since stated that the Council has engaged the Street Vendors Association on this matter so that street vendors are sensitized on why such
measures are being taken.
