NGOCC board chairperson Sarah Longwe says General
Kanene is embarrassing President Edgar Lungu by not
showing remorse for his actions after being pardoned for his
defilement.
Kanene, whose real names are Clifford Dimba, was recently
pardoned by the President after serving only a year of his
18-year jail term for defiling a 16-year-old.
But in his new song, which was posted online but withdrawn
later, Kanene condemned Zambians who expressed negative
views about his pardon.
Kanene went on to say he did not kill or murder anyone for
him not to deserve a pardon from President Lungu and that
he did not deserve the 18-year-jail sentence that was
slapped on him by the courts.
But Longwe yesterday said the women movement, who had
been calling on the Head of State to rescind his decision
over Kanene’s pardon, have now been vindicated.
“It’s a shame that President Lungu pardoned a wrong convict
who does not show remorse for his wrong actions; we have
been vindicated. The President erred big time,” she said.
Longwe appealed to President Lungu to consider
withdrawing the anti-gender based violence ambassador
title he bestowed on Kanene, adding that his latest song had
proved to be a mockery to the presidential pardon as it
glorified acts of gender-based violence.
“President Lungu can normalise his mistake over Kanene’s
pardon; firstly by withdrawing Kanene’s title of ambassador
of anti-GBV because Kanene’s latest song is a form of
glorifying GBV; he doesn’t see defilement as a crime worth
18 years in jail. So how can such a person be a champion for
anti-GBV and work alongside human rights activists? It
doesn’t need a psychologist to see that Kanene is making a
mockery of the presidential pardon,” said Longwe.
“Secondly, President Lungu must speak out that Kanene’s
pardon shouldn’t be used as an excuse for not prosecuting
him for any new wrongs he commits.”
