Illegal abortions among girls in Chadiza worries headman

Headman Kaliza, Apiton Banda from Chief Mwangala’s area has said that some elderly women in the area have a habit of giving traditional medicines to young girls who are pregnant to terminate their pregnancy. 

Mr. Banda says such habit is not only tarnishing the name of the village but also puts the lives of these teenagers in danger. 

He says the latest case happened over the weekend when a young woman was found very sick by her parents and was rushed to Chadiza District Hospital. 

Mr. Banda says the girl revealed that being given traditional medicines by a named woman so that she can terminate the pregnancy. 

He says that the matter is currently being handled by police. 

When contacted for a comment, Eastern Province Deputy Police Commissioner, Diamond Likashi says he has not yet received information on the matter. 

Meanwhile the Ministry of Health says that it will follow up the matter.
