‎Sugar: The silent enemy of health and aging | WestMac Media

‎By Dr Aaron Mujajati

‎We often think of sugar as just a sweet treat, but science shows it can quietly damage our bodies in ways we don’t notice until it’s too late. Excess sugar in your blood doesn’t just raise your energy, it raises your risk of diabetes. When blood sugar stays high, the body struggles to use insulin properly, leading to complications like heart disease, kidney failure, and blindness.
‎But sugar’s damage doesn’t stop there. In the brain, high sugar and insulin resistance are linked to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers even call Alzheimer’s “type 3 diabetes” because the brain loses its ability to use glucose efficiently. This means memory, focus, and decision‑making can all decline when sugar is unchecked.
‎And in the skin, sugar binds to proteins like collagen and elastin through a process called glycation. This produces harmful compounds known as AGEs (advanced glycation end‑products), which stiffen and weaken the skin. The result? Wrinkles, sagging, and faster visible aging.
‎The good news is that these effects are preventable. Choosing whole foods over processed sugar, drinking water instead of sodas, and staying active can protect your blood, brain, and skin. Every small step counts, less sugar today means more health, more clarity, and more youthful energy tomorrow.
‎So next time you reach for something sweet, remember: sugar doesn’t just taste good, it can steal your health, your memory, and your youth. You have heard.
