A Nigeria youth and '2016 Mandela Washington Fellow' has died in Virgina after a tragic accident during a hike at Cascade Falls on Saturday, June 25, 2016.
John Paul was studying Civic Leadership
at Virginia Tech through the 2016 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. He was 23 years old.
John was a shining star who was passionate about education, peacebuilding, children’s rights, and amplifying youth voices in sustainable development in Nigeria.
He served as President of the Nigerian Federation of UNESCO Clubs and Centers and Co-Coordinator of the Pan-African
Youth Network on the Culture of Peace, Nigeria.
John is remembered fondly by the other Mandela Washington Fellows from his native Nigeria and at Virginia Tech, and he leaves behind a legacy of servant leadership and a strong commitment to community service.
The Mandela Washington Fellowship team – including the Department of State, IREX, and our partners and staff has expressed deep condolences to all of the Mandela Washington Fellowship family and friends.
John’s dedication and leadership
will continue to be an inspiration to the entire YALI community.
