How to curb sexual immorality in schools

By Winston Muleba Jr
Sexual immorality problems in secondary school have long existed, but recently it has been getting attention, this is to say prevalence of sexual immorality among pupils at secondary level of education in Zambia cannot be over emphasized. It has grown to a level that creates fear and tension in the heart of anyone who has concern for the future of Zambia as a nation and that of the teeming youth that populates Zambia.

It is very sad to note that secondary school pupils who ought to be deeply devoted to their studies have taken sexuality to be party of their major dealings. It is no secret that many young people have contracted HIV and AIDS long before marriage age and most of them cannot stay in institution of learning due to immorality conducts. It is rather unfortunate that the young ones who ought to be the hope and future generation of Zambia through sound education are sinking deep and deeper daily in acts like sex before marriage.

It looks like Sexual problems among adolescents in schools have a lasting impact on the youth and lead to moral decadence and contaminated their identity at a young age after stuck in the mire of sin. I believe that the biblical standards of morality are universal and timeless; they are applicable to all generations, to all societies, and to all subcultures. Meaning this applies to  secondary schools, colleges, university and your community just as much as they applied to biblical Corinth and Rome. Lately most of the pupils hardly see the need of keeping themselves pure in terms of sex, this is because of the rate at which free sex is increasing, and as such they do not see the need why their sexual emotions should not be put to test. It is realized that many teenagers have come to embrace modern principles of living, compromising their sexual purity without a slight consideration. It is very amazing that even the older generation hardly speak about sexual purity.

Sexual immorality has thousands of destructive effects on pupils such include unforeseen and unwanted pregnancies and infections through sexually transmitted diseases. Some effects arising for young teens that engaged in sexual problems, they have a lack of attention from parents and the community because they are considered as the most despicable human consequences family degrading acts. Recently there was a misfortune scandal at Chikankata secondary which indeed saddened most of the Zambians; this is just one of the examples of few cases of sexual immorality which are happening in our country.

The cases of sexual immorality have become the headlines in print Medias; it is so shameful to note that even some teachers are rampantly sleeping with their pupils and teenager pupils sleeping with themselves in schools. This  poor sexual behavior in secondary schools pupils is often as a result of numerous factors contributing to very appalling sexual attitude. This includes pupils freely indulging in boy-girl relationships without check. Curiosity is the brain behind most of these relationships. In such relationships, a guy or a lady tries to experiment his or her sexual emotions and satisfies it. Gone are the days they dare to venture into such an arena.

Besides, there is also an idea of dating a guy or a lady for reason which only the two involve can explain. This idea is growing very fast among the pupils. Most of these 'dating’s' lack proper monitoring and counseling from responsible adults and that the two involve freely follow their emotional instinct to do whatever pleases them. These uncontrollable dating which lack maturity and proper monitoring often lands in sexual activities and hence immorality. Moreover, the watching of obscene materials is also on the ascendancy. It is very unfortunate that obscene materials freely circulate on our markets unchecked, directly portrayed by both the print and the electronic media especially the internet and the TV stations.

Our contemporary music contains quivers of sexual lyrics and quantum sexual exposure. In my view pupils have taken the opportunity of the current situation of the society to resort to the watching of these materials to satisfy their sexual drives. Many of them have ruined their minds for dirty sex, bad public exposures and other sexual abuses. Rape and defilement, gross fornication and prostitution are the fruits of some of such activities. Teenage pregnancy among the less privileged secondary school pupils is also very rampant. A number of children who are born out of wedlock due to irresponsible behavior are closely outweighing the legitimate children born to marriage couples. Due to improper upbringing, most of these children end up in the street. Those who have no choice resort to social vices such armed robbery, prostitution, drug dealings and among others. Diseases are raiding many with HIV/AIDS being the deadliest.

Life spans of people are shortened these days due to immorality. Our human resources capacity is endangered every day. Today there are more birth control options than ever before, but overpopulation and unwanted or unplanned pregnancies remain worldwide problems even so the problem of escalating pregnancies could be dealt with even without distributing condoms in schools. For most teenager pupils and other age groups in other institutions today, engaging in heterosexual intercourse without the use of a condom is the behavior that puts them at greatest risk for infection with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which can lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and is often ultimately fatal. According to The UN statics in Zambia, over 30 per cent of 15-19 year-old girls had already been pregnant or have had a child and frankly Adolescent pregnancy is an abrupt disruption to education, and an end to childhood.

The UN outgoing resident coordinator and UNDP representative Kanni Wignaraja said keeping girls safe and in secondary school, enforcing laws that deter early marriage and harshly punish rape, and the active promotion and access to birth control and reproductive health education was what would break this cycle. In view of the World Population Day's whose theme was ‘Focus is on Adolescent Pregnancy',  the reports showed that three out of 10 teenagers in Zambia among the ages of 15 to 19 were victims of early motherhood. This also responds to Sioma Secondary School head teacher Hastings Sikota who said the school had recorded about 30 pregnancies since January this year.

The solution to curbing sexual immorality activities in schools involves participation of parents, teachers, traditional rulers, educational administrators, religious leaders, other responsible adults and government are increasingly getting alarmed and concerned about trends in sexual behavior among the youth. There is indeed an upheaval in male-female relationships and there is a break-up of sexual morality. Sexual indulgence or promiscuity among our pupils is getting alarmingly high. Many boys and girls are often found with contraceptives in schools and colleges including pornographic videos. The wave of sexuality that is engulfing the youth is accompanied by increase in thefts, covetousness, shamelessness, jealousy, pride, selfishness, wickedness, rebellion and violence. Sex seems to be the root of all evils and not money.

It can be said without exaggeration that these trends pose a great danger to the future of this country."if we wish to destroy a nation, we must first destroy its morals". Sex education has to begin at home with parents controlling their children’s activities.
